Tempo Primo

2024 — Wentrup, Berlin

Titled after the musical instruction to return to the original tempo, the exhibition introduced flame-shaped monochrome canvases coated in red phosphorus and activated through match ignitions, leaving traces of charring across their surfaces. These new shaped paintings were shown alongside bronze sculptures from the Dancers series — groups of cast matchstick figures caught in states of tension and balance — and wall objects. The presentation marked a convergence of painting, sculpture and performative gesture within Wachholz's ongoing investigation of the matchstick as medium and motif.
